Birkat Kohanim: The Lesson of Forgiveness

By: Laura Chuven

In Parshat Naso we read of the blessings given by the kohanim. The phrasing of this blessing is in poetic format as the words and meaning increase with every line. The first verse blesses for material wealth, children, etc We ask Hashem to give us wealth but not to make it the focus of our life. The second verse refers to spiritual blessing, that Hashem lights us up through his goodness. Allowing the mitzvot to spiritually guide us. The third blessing seems to be a combination of spiritual and material.

Nechama Leibowitz asks what is the difference between lines 2 and 3? Shining seems better then showing face which doesn't fit with our format of growing in blessings. The Gemara in Rosh Hashana 17b tells a story that explains that when Hashem lifts his face he forgives our sins between us and him but not between man and man. We then understand that the third blessing is not to gain spiritual or material blessings but to learn the lesson of forgiveness connecting to Hashem by emulating him. This year living in the dorm was not always  easy for me. Along with the Torah I learned this year I also learned the lesson of forgiveness and connecting with other personalities. These lessons will carry on with me for many years to come.

Shabbat Shalom!
